Types of Acne

Acne is a disorder of the sebaceous glands. These glands are regulated by the endocrine system and more specifically, the androgens. During changes or spikes in hormones, such as during puberty, the sebaceous glands produce more oil. More oil production leads to a series of events that can result in the open and closed comedones – blackheads or whiteheads-and possibly papules and pustules-red, raised bumps and pus-filled pimples. Despite what your mother told you chocolate and french fries don’t cause acne. There are 3 main factors that cause acne: clogged pores, oil production, and bacteria. Stress and hormones are the biggest contributor to these factors this can happen during your teenage years or as an adult.

Teenage Or Pre-Teen Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition with eighty-five percent of teenagers and young adults experiencing acne during their lifetime. At Advanced Laser Clinic, we feel educating teenagers on the causes of acne, dispelling the myths, and explaining how to best treat acne is the most crucial step.

There is one main reason for teenage acne – HORMONES. This is true for boys and girls. These hormones enlarge the size and increase productivity of the sebaceous glands which increase the production of oil. Other causes or contributing factors for teenagers include genetics, cosmetics, emotional stress, lack of sleep, the environment and diet.

There are several treatment options for teenage and pre-teen acne at Advanced Laser Clinic. We will customize a treatment plan to meet specific factors. Compliance is the key to gaining the upper hand on acne and we will strive to help.

Adult Acne

Acne can be particularly frustrating for adults. Some adults continue to get acne well into their 30s and 40s. Women tend to get adult acne more often than men do. The most common reasons are fluctuating hormone levels, stress, family history, medication side effect or an undiagnosed medical condition. At Advanced Laser Clinic we are equipped to treat adult acne internally as well as external treatments such as a photofacial and it usually takes both. We will customize a program for you.
